Tens of thousands of Black Americans attended his open-casket funeral in September 1955, and images of his mutilated body were printed inJetmagazine and theChicago Defender, both influential Black-centric publications. These images came to symbolize widespread state-sponsored anti-Black violence at the hands of white people. Till’s murder became a rallying point for the civil rights movement that followed. In October 1955, the Jackson Daily News reported facts about Till’s father that had been suppressed by the U.S. military.

On August 28, 1955, Emmett, who was visiting relatives in Money, allegedly whistled at Carolyn Bryant, a white woman. After Bryant relayed the story to her husband and his half brother, they abducted Emmett at his great uncle’s home and proceeded to brutally beat him, shoot him in the head and dump his body in a river. Till’s murder and the images of his body, first published in Jet magazine and carried around the world by the news media, are considered by historians to be the beginning of the civil rights movement in America.

“I still like paintings of people doing things,” she told me.
